What is a Domain, why you need one and what does it mean to Register a Domain?

A domain name locates an organization or entity (or individual) on the Internet. It is a unique name by which you or your business will be known on the World Wide Web. Popular examples of Domain Names are www.edisc.co.za, www.google.com

You need a domain so that people who use the Internet can find your website on the World Wide Web. Anyone who want to establish a presence on the Internet has to Register a Domain name .

Domains have extensions like .co.za, .com, .biz etc. These extensions have certain meanings and it can point to Organizations, Companies and Countries.

Popular examples of Domain extensions and their explanations...

.co.za - This is SA's top domain name for commercial organisations.
.com - International domain name The classic dotcom domain name much sought after!
.net - Originally reserved for internet companies only but now anyone can buy a .net domain.
.info - Used for information-based services, whether commercial or noncommercial.
.org - The international .org domain is mainly aimed at non-commercial organisations, such as charities or trade unions and government departments.
.biz - For commercial use only. The rules of .biz require that the intended use of the domain be commercial in nature, and that whoever is registering it actually intends on using it instead of hoarding and reselling it.

Your domain name is the center of your Internet identity. It remains your "property" for life as long as you pay the renewal fee every year. So what type of things should you take into consideration when choosing the name that will represent you on the Web?

Keep it short
Although some places allow you to register a name with up to 63 characters, you have to keep in mind that people need to be able to remember it, and easily type it into their browser. Try to register the shortest name that your customers and visitors will associate with your Website. The general rule of thumb is, keep it under seven characters if possible. Keep in mind that the name must be 3 or more characters (Not including the suffix.)

Dot What?
For businesses, we recommend a .co.za .biz or .com suffix. However, .co.za and .com It is the first extension that most people try when searching for a Website.

Avoid Trademarked Names
There are two really good reasons for this. First, it’s not very nice. We have all heard the stories about the zany guy who thought ahead and bought "some-huge-multi-million-dollar-company.com" and sold it to the company for enough money to retire on. But, remember that those companies, like yours, have spent lots of time and money creating their brand, and what goes around comes around. Also, companies are no longer opening their pocketbooks to get their names back. They are calling their lawyers.

Character Types
Just a reminder. Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and dashes(-). Spaces and symbols are not allowed. Also, domain names are not case sensitive. Keep in mind to keep it simple though!

Ask Around
When you have settled on several available name choices, see what your friends and clients have to say. A name that may make perfect sense to you may be too hard for other people to remember. Is your domain easy to say? Is it hard to spell? Do you have to explain why you chose the name
